Proposed Residence A

This is to be a retirement home for an elderly Tanzanian couple. The specific requirements of this brief were that the house needed to accommodate not only the couple, but stand-alone accommodation for their children and grandchildren when they visit Dar es Salaam from overseas.

The site is an extensive plot directly onto the beach at Mbezi, Dar es Salaam. So, taking advantage of sea views was a key element in the design.

The client wished to see a modern house, set back from the beach, but with ample opportunities to view the sea. Internally, the plan formation allowed for entertainment spaces as well as more private family rooms. The internal spaces also include an extensive library. An exterior pool is integrated into the ground floor rooms of the house.

The palette of colours and materials is restrained with white rendered walls and concrete being the predominant material. In keeping with the client’s desire to see a modern family home suitable for a coastal tropical climate.
