The brief for this project was to provide 2 separate stand-alone residences on a single relatively tight residential site in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam. Although both occupants are family members, the challenge was to provide sufficient privacy, whilst at the same time allowing for some shared activities, such as pool & gymnasium.
Both units are based on the same original concept design but tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual occupants. Given that the site was relatively small for 2 residences of this scale, the challenge was to manage the site in such a way that sufficient spaces were provided both internally and externally for the houses which did not in any way make the homes feel constrained. Rather, the two houses complement one another in such a way that the whole is greater than its sum parts.
Timber is used extensively in this design, but generally speaking, mostly in the interior as well as sheltered parts of the exterior – in order that it is protected from the hot tropical sun & monsoon rains.
